Health insurance is great to have when you’re sick or hurt. But did you know you don’t have to wait for something bad to happen to use your benefits? Regular check-ups and screenings can help keep you healthy. You may also find problems that can be treated before they become serious. You can get these important check-ups at no extra cost.

All health insurance plans offered through Access Health CT cover preventive services.

These are things like:

  • Your annual physical or check-up
  • Cholesterol screenings
  • Cancer screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies and well-women visits
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Diabetes screenings
  • Vaccines

The documents your insurance company sends you will tell you what screenings and services your health plan covers. You can also find the information on your insurance company’s website.

You have to see a doctor who is in your plan’s network to avoid having to pay extra for preventive services. That’s why it’s important to make sure your primary care provider (PCP) is in-network when you sign up for a health insurance plan. If you need help finding a doctor, your insurance company can help. ConnectiCare, Anthem and HUSKY Health have tools on their websites to help you find an in-network provider. (Links will open in a new window).

Before your appointment, it’s a good idea to understand how your insurance plan works. There are many services your insurance will cover before you meet your deductible. But you may have to pay a copay or coinsurance, especially if your check-up leads to another appointment or service. Our glossary will help you understand the terms in your plan documents.
