Life happens and circumstances can change overnight. These changes can be happy like a new baby or a marriage. Or they can be stressful like the loss of a job, a divorce or a move. Either way, Access Health CT is here to make sure in times of change, you’re covered with health and dental insurance.

The annual Open Enrollment window is usually the only time of the year you can sign up for health or dental insurance or change your plan. Unless you have a big life change.

These changes are called Qualifying Life Events (QLEs). They include:

  • Getting married or divorced
  • Getting pregnant, having a baby or adopting a child
  • Losing your insurance due to a job change or loss
  • Losing insurance through your spouse or parent
  • Losing your eligibility for HUSKY Health (Medicaid)
  • Moving to Connecticut
  • A change in your household income
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen or gaining eligible immigration status.

NOTE: If you qualify for the Covered CT Program or HUSKY Health (Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)), or if you are an American Indian or Alaska Native, you can sign up for insurance any time of the year.

Your Qualifying Life Event will open a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You generally have 60 days to sign up for or change your health or dental insurance.

What to do after a Qualifying Life Event

  1. Make sure your Event qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period. You’ll also need to provide proof of your Event. This guide includes the full list of life events and what documentation you will need. (opens in a new window).
