Being self-employed means you can set your own schedule and be your own boss. But it also means that you may need to find your own health or dental coverage. Access Health CT (AHCT) is here to help you get the coverage you need.

Understanding coverage

If you’re self-employed, you may qualify for health or dental coverage through AHCT. You can shop for coverage just like anyone else and may even qualify for financial help to lower your monthly costs. Here is what’s available:

  • Qualified Health Plans (QHPs): These are health insurance plans that cover ten Essential Health Benefits like doctor visits, hospital stays and prescriptions.
  • Stand-Alone Dental Plans (SADPs): These are separate dental plans you can enroll in to help cover services like cleanings, fillings and other dental care for you or your family. Covered CT Program If you enroll in a QHP and meet certain income and other eligibility requirements, the federal government will pay for a portion of your monthly premium and the State of Connecticut will pay the remaining portion. Your out-of-pocket costs for a QHP will also be covered.
  • HUSKY Health (Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)): If your household income is below a certain level, you and your household members may qualify for no- or low-cost coverage through HUSKY Health.

When you apply for coverage, you will need to enter information about yourself and your household. This information, such as your household income and who lives with you, determines what type of coverage is available to you.

A new platform is coming soon

In July 2025, AHCT will launch a new platform called BusinessPlus. It will help small business owners decide if an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) is the right fit for their team. With an ICHRA, employers can give their employees tax-free money to help pay for health insurance. Employees can then shop for a plan through Access Health CT.

BusinessPlus makes it easier to offer an ICHRA and gives employees more choice when picking the plan that works best for them. It may also help small businesses save money and stand out as a great place to work.

How to enroll

You can enroll in a health or dental plan during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which starts November 1. If you lose other coverage or have a major life change, like getting married, having a baby, or moving to Connecticut, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).This means that you may be able to enroll in a health or dental plan before the next Open Enrollment Period. If you are eligible for HUSKY Health or the Covered CT Program, you can enroll at any time.
