Become an insurance broker to improve the health and well being of your community while earning income for you and your family

Tell me more about the program:

Do you want to be more involved in your community while also creating a transformative career path? Then the Access Health CT Broker Academy Program is for you. This exciting opportunity is open to residents throughout Connecticut who are interested in becoming an insurance broker.

You know your community best. As a licensed broker you can leverage the relationships you have and build new ones to help members of your community access health insurance and get the care they need to stay healthy. With each insurance policy you sell, you will earn a commission paid by the insurance carrier. And it’s a great time to get involved because the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 4% increase in job growth through 2024 – which means there is a lot of opportunity to connect your community to better health and to increase your income at the same time.

When you become a Broker Academy candidate, you are welcomed into a network of supportive people who care deeply for your and community’s well being. As part of the program, you will receive free training, a five-month mentorship with an experienced broker, professional development and program support. Additionally, you’ll also receive weekly training sessions for program readiness in May and be expected to join in-person classes in June. From start to finish, the program is built with your experience in mind, to make sure that you leave equipped with the skills and tools necessary to be a successful broker in your community.

Why did Access Health CT create the Broker Academy?

Access Health CT’s mission is all about reducing the state’s uninsured population and health disparities. We’ve done a great job over the last 10 years by insuring more than one million residents, but there is still more work to be done. The state’s uninsured population is about 5.9%. But some communities within Connecticut have a higher uninsured rate – almost 20% in some places. Access Health CT conducted a robust research report that helped us understand our communities better and how we can make a difference.

What we found was that most communities with higher rates of the uninsured are more likely to be neighborhoods with predominantly Black and Brown residents, who are disproportionately affected by health disparities. We can do better. But we need help. And that’s where you come in as a member of the Broker Academy. As a broker, you can help make positive change at a community level by helping to ensure that all Connecticut residents, no matter who they are or where they live, get access to health and life insurance.

How do I get involved?

To apply for the program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older
  • Show proof of GED, High School/College Diploma
  • Provide one-three letters of professional references
  • Draft a personal statement: Why you would be a good fit for this program?
  • Provide a demonstrated history of community involvement or service, communication skills, and customer service skills (resume)

Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Access Health CT to determine acceptance into the Academy. Applications for the 2023 Broker Academy Program are due on March 31, 2024.

Why is it a good time to be part of the Broker Academy?

There is an urgent need for brokers from different communities. Because of recent legislation, some who were eligible for Medicaid as part of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency may lose their eligibility in the coming months. As such, it is more important than ever to have trusted brokers in all communities in our state, particularly underserved communities of color that are disproportionately affected by health disparities. These new brokers will serve as a resource to residents, who may likely be their neighbors, family or friends, and help them navigate the healthcare system, get enrolled in quality health insurance plans and prevent coverage gaps.
